A refrigerator - in plain language, a “fridge” - is a common household appliance.
Refrigeration is an essential way of storing food and keeping it cold. The lower temperature stops bacteria from reproducing and reduces the rate at which food is spoiled.
A refrigerator maintains a temperature a few degrees above the freezing point of water. The best temperature range for storing perishable food between 3 and 5°C. The fridge’s freezer is a similar storage device that maintains a temperature below freezing point.
The compressor is a vital component of a domestic refrigeration system.
How Does A Domestic Refrigerator Work?
A domestic fridge consists of a thermally insulated compartment and a heat pump which can be mechanical, electronic or chemical. Most household refrigerators use a gas compression cycle that uses a circulating refrigerant such as R134a to transfer heat from inside the fridge to the room outside. This cools the contents of the fridge to a lower temperature that of the room.
